Brick Paver Maintenance Tips
That new brick patio or walkway looks great; it ties your landscape together perfectly, and the neighbors are even a bit jealous. But in order to keep it looking great, a little bit of simple maintenance is required.
Maintenance keeps your outdoor brick paver area looking fresh while preventing any potential damage, or cosmetic blemishes that may arise. We, at Paver Maintenance Specialists recommend applying common sense when it comes to maintenance. But if you’re doing it a couple times a year, you’re ahead of the game.
The main components of a good paver maintenance plan are as follow: Cleaning, sealing and weed control. This maintenance really does not require much upfront work and can save you a lot of heartache down the road.
Below is a set of tips to keep your brick pavers in good shape.
1. Replenish the Sand and Seal
Depending on what type of finish your brick pavers have, you want to do one of a couple things. Fill the cracks between pavers with sand, which will harden when moistened. This helps to hold the pavers in place and prevents weeds from growing between the bricks. Another tactic may be re-sealing the pavers every two or four years using a sealant designed for pavers. Apply the sealant evenly according to the product’s directions. Sealing protects the surface from environmental degradation and can also prevent stains from setting into the bricks.
2. Wash Away Grime
Wash away grime by spraying the pavers with a hose. Avoid directing the water spray straight into the joints, as it can flush out the sand, particularly if you use regular sand. Sporadically sweep the surface to keep it free of debris because it can collect moisture and promote moss growth. Avoid raking as this poses the risk of scratching the surface. If you’ve used a harder seal finish or gone the polymeric sand route (we don’t recommend this), pressure washing is a great way to keep your pavers looking good as new.
3. Remove Stains
If stains do appear, scrub them using a mild detergent mixed with some water. Use a wire brush to remove the stain. Test out the detergent and brush in an inconspicuous location to see how it works. Rinse away the detergent completely after cleaning.
4. Take Care of Any Weeds
Lastly, if weeds are becoming an issue for you, despite following some of the steps above, you can always treat the area with an anti-weed product. We don’t recommend bombing the area with Roundup, as you’ll be likely to kill some things you didn’t intend to. There are some excellent vinegar-based substances that can curb weed growth.
Keeping brick pavers shining like new is really not that difficult. A little bit of effort can go a very long way, and is undoubtedly easier than fixing problems not dealt with for years.
