Exploring Brick Paver Pattern Designs

Oakland County Paver Contractor Explains Pattern Designs
At Paver Maintenance Specialists, we believe that brick paver designs are at the heart of a compelling and eye catching landscape. Projects including driveways, patios, decks, gardens, pools (and really any other outdoor area), can be greatly enhanced with a brick paving installation. These outdoor additions to a hardscape can be both visually attractive and offer functional value as well.

With the wide variety of patterns available, every homeowner can use the services of a brick paver contractor as a way to give their homes a bit more shine and character. We know there are endless examples of brick pattern types out there and coming to a decision can be difficult. Below we’ll break down five of the most common designs and discuss how they are best implemented.

1.    The Basket Weave. This style has been around for centuries and can be seen decorating ancient towns across Europe. Another way to refer to or think about the basket weave is a checkerboard where the bricks are laid horizontally and vertically against each other. This ends up creating the effect of them weaving in and out of each other, hence the name. This pattern is considered a classic, and although it can be used in many contexts, it is probably best used for a patio or other highly trafficked area.

2.    Stretcher Bond. This pattern is another commonly used brick paving style that utilizes long, rectangular shapes that are laid out side by side without alternating pieces or sizes. The result is a flexible installation style that can be enlarged or chopped down easily to fit any area. Stretcher bond is seen most commonly around decks and walkways.

3.    Herringbone. Interested in getting a bit more fancy? Herringbone is a good choice for homeowners desiring a trendier design. In this style, bricks are laid at a 45 or 90-degree angle. The pattern has many angles that give it its uniquely energetic feel. Because this style tightly interlocks the brick, it can be adapted to handle a lot of pressure making it ideal for driveways.

4.    Stack Bond. Of all the brick paver design patterns, this is the simplest. The bricks are placed side-by-side creating strong continuous lines along a grid structure.  Due to its minimalist nature, this pattern can be used virtually anywhere. If you want to spruce things up, the bricks can also be laid at a 45-degree angle to create more interest.

5.    Mixed Design. If you’re looking for a unique or quirky look, then mixing designs might be a good idea. As the name implies, a mixture of different sizes, shapes, orientations, and even colors can be combined to create a modern look with a specialized appeal. However, given the random nature of a mixed pattern, it can be challenging to properly fit to an area without the help from a professional brick paver installer.

There are many options out there when it comes to picking a brick paver design. Especially when it comes to mixed or custom designs, the number of choices you have is quite high. The key is matching patterns with the style of your home and your personal taste to create a beautiful addition to your landscape.
